Underwater Mining Conference – Call for Abstracts

You are invited to submit abstracts for presentations and posters for the 47th Underwater Mining Conference in Bergen 11 – 12 September 2018.

The topics for this year’s conference are Challenges of Going Further and Deeper, Advances in Marine Research and Subsea Technology Beyond Oil and Gas.

Topics of Interest

We welcome presentations that address the commercial, environmental and technological viability of deep-sea mining projects. Topics of particular interest are:

  • Uncovering hidden deposits: latest geological and geophysical methods to explore the deep sea
  • Technological developments towards improved autonomy, range and capabilities of underwater vehicles
  • Lessons learned from near shore mining and other industries
  • Economic models for future mining 
  • Plumes in the deep sea
  • Law of the Sea

As always, other timely and significant topics related to marine minerals are also welcome.

Abstract Submissions

Please submit your abstract to the UMC Conference Coordinator: Karynne Chong Morgan, karynnem@hawaii.edu using the UMC 2018 Abstract template within 30 April 2018.

UMC 2018

Underwater Mining Conference (UMC) is the world premier venue for marine mineral mining. 200 world leaders from government, academia and industry are brought together to exchange information and ideas on prudent and responsive development of marine mineral resources.

The 47th UMC is presented by the International Marine Minerals Society in partnership with the K.G. Jensen Centre for Deep Sea Research at the University of Bergen and GCE Subsea.

UMC 2018 will take place in Bergen in 11-14 September. The conference starts with an icebreaker event the evening 10 September. The technical conference takes place 11 – 12 September. A subsea lab and field trip is planned 13 September and a geotechnical field trip is planned 14 September.
